Oxygen, (compressed air) is your tire’s worst enemy. Air is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other. Nitrogen is inert, non combustible and non corrosive. Oxygen, on the other hand, is immensely destructive to rubber and other tire materials. As soon as a tire is manufactured and exposed to air, the effects of “oxidation” begin to deteriorate the rubber. Over time it loses its elasticity and strength, just like an old rubber band you’ve probably found around your home. This same process occurs in tires inflated with air as the oxygen attacks the rubber molecules, working from the inside out, until the oxygen, and its destructive properties, permeates the tire structure and ultimately the tread. Nitrogen vs. Oxygen

Nitrogen

Compressed Air (Oxygen)

  • Nitrogen is a dry gas and free of moisture
  • Nitrogen doesn’t deteriorate rubber like the “wet oxygen” in compressed air does
  • Nitrogen has a larger molecular structure and won’t leak like oxygen.
  • Nitrogen makes tires less susceptible to air loss with temperature changes.
  • Increases tire life up to 30%
  • Improves fuel economy
  • Reduces the chance of tire failure up to 50%
  • Improves steering, braking and handling
  • Reduces wheel corrosion
  • Reduces running tire temperature
  • Maintains proper tire pressure
  • Reduces chance of tire failure
  • Dramatically slows pressure loss from permeation
  • Improves fuel economy
  • Reduces tire oxidation
  • Eliminates interior wheel corrosion
  • Decreases false alarms and activation of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

  • The “wet oxygen” found in compressed air contains moisture, causing oxidation.
  • Over time oxidation breaks down tire rubber
  • Oxygen molecules are smaller than nitrogen and leak 3 to 4 times faster
  • After rubber is broken down, it loses elasticity, strength and leaks more
  • Tires lose air pressure naturally through the process of permeation
  • A tire inflated with compressed air will normally lose 1 to 3 pounds of pressure per month
  • The warmer the weather the more pressure tires will lose
